There are different needs of human beings like residence and food. In the modern world, scientist are trying to make well developmental research in each field. According to the need, different countries are conducting research on the different programs.

Among the different countries, Pakistan is one of the countries which is providing an abundant quantity of milk. To meet the requirement of milk production, all milk-producing animals like buffaloes, cows, goats, and sheep are nourishing on the forage grass. For milk production of animals, forage grass is very important because it is very palatable and digestible.

Different types of microorganisms are present in the forage grass, which are helpful for the digestion of the fodder. They also for the proper good health and milk production of the animals. It also improves the breeding efficiency of dairy animals.

To feed animals

For feeding of animal, forage is very important. It is the cheapest form of fodder, which is an important source for feeding of animals. Fodder is also used for maintaining of population of animals.

Fodder shortage period

The serious issues of health and growth in our country are mostly due to the irregular and short supply of fodder to animal. In Pakistan, there are two cycles of the shortage of fodder: the first shortage period is from October to November.  The second in summer from May to June.

That’s why it is needed to solve this forage shortage problem during this shortage period. Some perennial crops are introducing in Pakistan like Mott grass and Rhodes grass, these perennial crops can harvest many times in a year.

Importance of fodder

Fodder crops are compulsory for animals, these crops are the basic source of energy. The share of domesticated animals is 58.92 percent in agriculture. The national domestic gross production is about 11.11 percent. Now a day’s mostly livestock are not completely nourished, due to the short supply of good quality fodder.

Area of fodder crop

The fodder crops area is decreasing day by day in Pakistan. According to the Agriculture Statistics of Pakistan of 2017-18, about 1.99 million hectares area is used for farming of fodder for livestock, from the total cultivated area is only 10% it covers.

Due to the reduction in the area of forage crop, so also the forage yield reduced. The mean development of fodder production was 23.5t ha-1 (statistic of agriculture Pakistan 2009-10). It was lowest for fulfilling just half of the current need of the domestic animal inhabitants in the country. About 2% reduction in area of the fodder crop in every ten years was noticed by agricultural scientist, that is quite alarming.
