Beijing Ranks Third Globally, As A Scientific And Innovation Center

According to the 2022 international science and technology innovation index, which was released by Tsinghua University’s Center for Industrial Development and Environmental Governance and the Natural Group after evaluating 100 international science and technology innovation centre cities (metropolitan circles) in science and technology, innovation, and the innovation center, Beijing ranked third, after San Jose and New York.

The Greater Bay Area of Guangdong, Hong Kong, Macao, and Shanghai are among the top ten. Nature magazine recently published an index based on the share of papers published in the journal by research institutions in major cities and metropolitan areas, with Beijing ranking first and Shanghai third; eight Chinese cities ranked in the global top 20 and 18 in the top 50.

According to the World Intellectual Property Organization’s Global Innovation Index 2022, which evaluates the performance of 132 economies’ innovation ecosystems, China ranks 11th, up one rank from last year, marking a steady improvement for the tenth consecutive year. China is also first among 36 middle- and high-income economies and third among 17 Asian and Oceanian economies.

Beijing, in particular, has been a hotbed of scientific and technological innovation.

The advancement of scientific and technological innovation in China is reflected not only in the growth of its scientific and technological input and output but also in the obvious enhancement of scientific and technological innovation’s role in promoting economic and social development.

Beijing ranks first because it has continued to invest heavily in scientific and technological innovation in recent years. Previously, it had accelerated the development of an international scientific and technological innovation centre, established three national laboratories successfully, and produced a number of world-class original achievements.

While consolidating its position as the national center for science and technology innovation, Beijing should continue to play a leading role in forming a more powerful and resilient national science and technology innovation network. Only in this way will Beijing be able to solidify its position as a center of science and technology innovation, providing a boost to the country’s high-quality development.
