Total of 2162 cases for DNA and serology analysis were received by the Sindh Forensic DNA and Serology Lab (SFDL) in 2022, at the Dr. Panjwani Center for Molecular Medicine and Drug Research (PCMD), University of Karachi.

A spokesman for the International Center for Chemical and Biological Sciences (ICCBS), University of Karachi, stated in a statement that there had been an increase in cases compared to the prior year (2021).

On the other hand, Prof. Dr. M. Iqbal Choudhary, Director of the International Center for Chemical and Biological Sciences and Coordinator-General of COMSTECH, has expressed satisfaction with the calibre of work done in the Sindh Forensic DNA and Serology Lab (SFDL) and has given Dr. Ishtiaq Ahmad Khan and his team for having smart teamwork at the SFDL.

Prof. Iqbal Choudhary also thanked the Sindh Government for its continuous support and financial assistance.

A total of 1,494 cases were submitted for serology analysis in 2022, and every single one of them involved murder, according to statistics created by the Sindh Forensic DNA and Serology Lab.

In contrast, 668 cases involving dead body identification (53 cases), murder (111 cases), paternity (20 cases), robbery (37 cases), sexual assault (395 cases), and sodomy were received for the forensic DNA test (52 cases).

Additionally, the Sindh Forensic DNA and Serology Lab (SFDL) organised training for about 100 crime scene unit officers and continued to support the capacity building of pertinent departments. It is important to note that these trainings had a positive effect on the officers’ overall performances, which helped them solve crucial cases.

Prior to now, there had been a significant trend toward sending sexual assault cases for the forensic DNA analysis, and the LEAs sent more than double the requests for DNA analysis in murder and robbery cases as compared to 2021.
