Shaheed Hakim Mohammed Said, former governor of Sindh, a renowned Hakim (physician) of international renown, Chancellor of Hamdard University, President of Hamdard Foundation Pakistan, and Chairman of Hamdard Laboratories (Waqf) Pakistan, received lavish tributes.

The speakers at a memorial service for “Shaheed Hakim Mohammed Said” described him as a distinguished scholar and humanist. He was a man of strict principles with an exceptional sense of time management. The Hamdard Foundation Pakistan organised the event.

He was born on January 9, 1920, in Delhi, in the pre-partition days of British rule in the Sub-Continent. His father was associated with the herbal medicine business and had established Hamdard Dawakhana in 1906 in Delhi, India.

Said received his early education in Delhi, where he studied Arabic, Persian, Urdu, and English, as well as the Holy Quran. At the age of 20, he graduated from Ayurvedic and Unani Tibia College in Delhi with a degree in unani medicine.

After finishing his education, he joined Hamdard and managed Hamdard’s herbal medicine business alongside his elder brother, Hakim Abdul Hameed. As a result of partition, he and his wife and daughter moved from India to Pakistan in January 1948.

Sadia Rasheed, Hakim Said’s daughter, said on the occasion that her father was a devout Muslim who would get up in the middle of the night to pray. When he could, he would recite the Quran and fast. Yet he did not impose his beliefs on others. “We used to go to all sorts of parties,” she recalled.

Senator Mushahid Hussain Syed, a chief gust, described Shaheed Hakim Mohammed Said as an intellectual, inclusive, and progressive thinker. Shaheed Hakim Mohammed Said, according to him, also has the ability to teach and respect others.

He stated that Hakim Said’s institution was effective in combating the COVID-19 pandemic and that the world recognised it. The senator went on to say that Shaheed Hakim Mohammed Said left a legacy of knowledge, education, and learning. He assured the participants that he would represent Shaheed Hakim Mohammed Said’s institution of serving humanity in parliament.

Director General of Hamdard University, Professor Abdul Hakim Manan, said that the service of Shaheed Hakim Mohammed Said was so long that he was unable to explain it in such a short time. He claimed that Shaheed Hakim Mohammed Said made great contributions in the fields of tibb, herbal medicine manufacturing, and many more.

Shaheed Mohammed Said, the Hakim, was the first to use modern machinery to produce herbal medicines and standardise them on a global scale.

Dr. Zafar Iqbal of the International Islamic University stated that the current development of Tibb was solely due to the efforts of Shaheed Hakim Mohammed Said, which he claimed were recognised not only in Pakistan but also internationally. It is not incorrect to refer to him as an institution, and Shaheed Hakim Mohammed Said was a significant political leader.

His vision for the country was unique, and he desired to serve humanity regardless of religion, caste, or other factors. Shaheed Hakim Mohammed Said was a proponent of consensus-building dialogues on national issues.

Anwar Raza, President of the National Press Club Islamabad, expresses gratitude to the Humdard Foundation for organising such an important gathering to talk about Shaheed Hakim Mohammed Said’s life and achievements.

Dr. Asif Mehmood Jan, the Federal Tax Ombudsman, said on the occasion that Shaheed Hakim Mohammed Said was a big personality who dedicated his life to the welfare of humanity.

Several other people praised the late Hakim Mohammed Said and his organization. He was said to have many friends in foreign countries, particularly Turkey, Germany, Kuwait, Iran, and Lebanon. His frequent trips to the United States of America also allowed him to form friendly relationships with a number of academics there.

He was a social reformer who was dedicated to the cause of Pakistan and the youth. Work was Mohammed Said’s life mission. He once stated that he had no work except to work. Hakim Said was a prolific writer who wrote, edited, and compiled over 200 books and journals on tibb, medicine, education, Islam, and Pakistan in Urdu and English.

As a delegate from Pakistan, Mohammed Said attended over 100 international conferences. They claimed he was also a member of more than 30 associations and learned bodies.

In 1991, Hakeem Saeed established Hamdard University. He made enormous contributions in the fields of health, science, education, and culture. He was awarded Nishan-e-Imtiaz in 2002 in recognition of his services. He died on October 17, 1998.
