In a ceremony held on Monday at the National Institutes of Health (NIH), Pakistan officially assumed leadership of the Global Health Security Agenda (GHSA) Steering Group for 2023.

The ceremony was attended by the steering group member nations, Mr. Mirza Nasirud Din Mashhood Ahmad, Special Secretary of the Ministry of National Health Services, and Italian Ambassador Andreas Ferrarese.

The Italian GHSA secretariat provided a briefing on the initiatives carried out under the GHSA initiative in 2022, according to the statement. Members congratulated Pakistan on assuming the chairmanship of the GHSA in 2023.

According to the special secretary, infectious diseases pose significant challenges to the social and economic development of every nation. He also recognised the efforts made by the GHSA Steering Group to provide strategic direction, guidance, and overall GHSA priorities.

Maj-Gen Prof. Aamer Ikram, the chief executive officer of the National Institutes of Health (NIH), stated that it was a privilege for Pakistan to chair the GHSA steering group in 2023 and reaffirmed Pakistan’s unwavering commitment to carrying out the Global Health Security Agenda’s initiatives.

Pakistan has also been chosen as the GHSA Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR) Action Package Chair. Pakistan has also been actively contributing to the GHSA AMR Action Package since 2021 and helping to achieve the goals of the GHSA Framework 2024. It received recognition and was chosen to hold the esteemed office of AMR action package chair.

The Global Health Security Agenda (GHSA) is a group of countries and international organizations that work together to build capacity and enhance coordination in order to prevent, detect, and respond to infectious disease outbreaks of global concern.

GHSA was launched in 2014 with the goal of improving global health security and was a response to the West Africa Ebola outbreak. The GHSA is co-chaired by the World Health Organization (WHO) and the Government of Japan, and brings together over 60 countries, international organizations, and partners.
