In order to increase transparency in the appointment of the Executive Director (ED), Federal Higher Education Commission (HEC) Chairman Dr. Mukhtar Ahmed established a 6-member scrutiny committee.

Dr. Akram Sheikh will serve as the convener of the commission, and Dr. Sarosh Hashmat Lodhi, vice chancellor of NED University, Dr. Ghulam Raza Bhatti, chancellor of Sheikh Ayaz University, Syed Junaid Akhlaq, CEO of Nayatel, and Wahaj us Sraj, director of the Higher Education Commission, will serve as secretary.

The Higher Education Commission is responsible for the promotion and development of higher education in the country. The HEC’s Executive Director, who also serves as the Principal Accounting Officer, holds a very important position. However, for the past three years, no permanent appointment has been made to this position.

ED will closely with the HEC Chairman and other senior officials to develop and implement initiatives aimed at improving access to and the quality of higher education in Pakistan.

This is the fifth time an application has been made for this position, and a record-breaking 161 applications have been received as a result. The appointment of the HEC Executive Director, who will serve for a term of four years, is anticipated to be completed in the same month.

The goal of a scrutiny body is to promote accountability, transparency, and integrity in the sector it oversees. Examples of scrutiny bodies in different industries include regulatory bodies, auditing firms, and government oversight committees.

The Executive Director of Higher Education Commission (HEC) is a senior official responsible for overseeing the policies and programs of HEC which operates under the Ministry of Education and plays a key role in promoting and enhancing the quality of higher education in Pakistan.

ED is responsible for implementing the strategic vision of HEC, managing its day-to-day operations, and ensuring the implementation of policies and programs aimed at enhancing the quality of higher education in the country.
