Pakistan Sets Family Planning As Essential Services

The President called for changing societal attitudes towards family planning services on Monday in order to advance reproductive health and efficiently control Pakistan’s population growth.

Family planning services, according to him, are the most effective intervention to slow the population growth that is placing a severe strain on the nation’s resources.

According to a press release from the President’s Secretariat Press Wing, the president made these comments to Dr. Luay Shabaneh, the UNFPA‘s country representative, who visited him at Aiwan-e-Sadr.

The president claimed that by supporting national family planning initiatives, opinion leaders, media outlets, and religious scholars could contribute to positive behavioural changes in society.

He claimed that in order to educate the populace about the family planning, it was necessary for national religious scholars and the media. He emphasised the need for all parties involved to work together to advance family planning and better family health as fundamental rights of married couples.

Out of 9 million pregnancies in Pakistan, 50% were unwanted, according to the president, who emphasised that this was because the country’s population lacked access to family planning services and products.

In particular, he stressed the importance of improving maternal and reproductive health, lowering the rate of infant and maternal mortality, and combating stunting and malnutrition.

He urged the provincial governments, civil society, NGOs, media outlets, religious leaders, and pertinent government departments and agencies to take effective action to advance the country’s agenda for family planning and improved health. The president was briefed by Dr. Luay Shabaneh on the UNFPA’s role in promoting family planning services in Pakistan.

He stated that UNFPA had been a key player in supporting all of Pakistan’s demographic and health surveys to date, as well as the nation’s efforts to expedite the delivery and accessibility of high-quality family planning information and services.
