The Americas were urged to act to reduce green-house gas emissions from shipping in order to address the climate crisis. Among the top 10 largest emitters globally, if shipping were a “country,” it would be.

The nations of the Americas were urged to safeguard and rehabilitate blue carbon ecosystems, including mangroves, salt marshes, seagrass beds, and river grass beds, which can store up to five times as much carbon per unit of area as terrestrial forests while defending coastlines from the effects of climate change and promoting biodiversity.
