China Initiates Deployment Program Of AI Driven Scientific Research

The deployment program for AI-driven scientific research, dubbed AI for Science, has been launched by China’s Ministry of Science and Technology (MOST) and the National Natural Science Foundation of China (NSFC), according to Xinhua News Agency on Monday.

According to Xinhua, MOST and the NSFC intend to establish a cutting-edge research and development (R&D) system for AI-driven scientific research, closely integrating important issues in mathematics, physics, chemistry, astronomy, and other fundamental disciplines in order to implement the Next Generation Artificial Intelligence Development Plan released by the State Council.

The R&D system will focus on the scientific research needs in key areas such as drug R&D, gene research, biological cultivation, and new material R&D.

Citing MOST officials, the report said that AI-driven scientific research has now become a new frontier of the global AI sector. China has a strong foundation in computing power, scientific research data, and AI technology.

Officials stated that in order to promote the thorough fusion of AI and scientific research, the convergence of resources, and the improvement of relevant innovation capacity, it is necessary to further strengthen the system setup and overall guidance.

Beijing-based tech industry observer Liu Dingding claims that China has recently encouraged major internet technology companies to step up their efforts in AI-related research and application.

The primary direction of the upcoming internet generation is thought to be AI. But in addition to the internet, Liu asserts that in the future, almost every area of the economy—including manufacturing, agriculture, education, and medicine—will need AI support.

The technology, according to Liu, is expected to significantly boost the productivity of millions of industries. Chinese companies have also significantly advanced in the field over the last two years. Tech goliaths like Baidu, Alibaba, Tencent, and others have allegedly launched a number of goods and services.
