HEC Launches Capacity Building Training Program For Faculty Members

In collaboration with the Punjab Higher Education Department and as part of the Higher Education Development in Pakistan (HEDP) project, the Higher Education Commission (HEC), Pakistan, has started a capacity-building training program for the faculty of nine divisions of the Punjab.

In this regard, the HEDP project team of HEC organised a two-day training at the University of Education, Lahore, for the faculty of 60 affiliated colleges in the Lahore District. The capacity-building workshop trained the first group of 109 participants, including more than 60% women.

Six modules made up the training: “Transition to Semester System,” “Academic Advice and Career Progression,” “Use of Technology in Education,” “Learning Assessment and Feedback,” “Curriculum and Course Development,” and “Teaching Methodology: Andragogy and Pedagogy.”

Undergraduate Education Policy (UEP) implementation and rollout are overseen by the Post-Secondary Education Reform Unit (PERU) team, a project component, in close collaboration with the Higher Education Departments. The activity is led by Programme Specialist, HEDP, Asad Khan (HEDs).

The HEDP project’s main objective is to support Pakistan’s affiliated colleges’ tertiary education system, and it pursues this goal through a number of initiatives, including IT support, governance, capacity building, and financial autonomy. The Capacity Building Training Program is the result of advocacy meetings with HED Punjab that were held in the past.

During those meetings, they proposed hiring 1,600 faculty members from 800 affiliated colleges, whose capacity would be improved gradually. After the training, there was an online post-test and feedback form. The results of the pre- and post-tests show that the training significantly increased the participants’ knowledge of UEP.

Nadeem Asghar, Deputy Secretary for HED Punjab, was present for both the opening and closing ceremonies (distribution of certificates). He emphasised the significance of such training for faculty development, particularly in the affiliated colleges, and the importance of effective coordination between federal and provincial bodies.
