The Milano 2022 Declaration was endorsed by 35 national and specialist endocrine societies and is referenced in the ESE White Paper on Hormones in European Health Policies.

The second annual European Hormone Day observed on May 15, 2023, by the European Society of Endocrinology (ESE), European Hormone and Metabolism Foundation (ESE Foundation), and other collaborators.

All those with an interest in endocrine health and disease come together on European Hormone Day to raise awareness of the importance of hormones and to call for change in the way that hormones are treated in European health policies.

The Milano 2022 Declaration was endorsed by 35 national and specialist endocrine societies and is referenced in the ESE White Paper on Hormones in European Health Policies.

It calls for a stronger inclusion of the endocrine health perspective as an integral part of European health policies. This builds on the success of the first European Hormone Day in 2022.

An annexe to the Declaration called 10 Recommendations for Good Hormone Health has been released by ESE and the ESE Foundation and can be downloaded here.

With a better understanding of the role that hormones play in health and disease, according to ESE President Martin Reincke, more can be done to prevent, identify, and treat common endocrine-related diseases like diabetes, thyroid problems, and cancer, as well as the 400 rare conditions that affect millions of people in Europe.

The opportunity presented by European Hormone Day is a chance to raise awareness of the simple steps that each of us can take to improve our endocrine health.

The ESE Foundation’s chair, Andrea Giustina, adds that a coordinated effort is needed to prioritise hormones in health policy-making. Given that hormones are involved in so many different diseases, the endocrine community has a special chance to band together and demand change.

Because hormones matter, European Hormone Day brings us together to compel decision-makers to consider hormone health, attract critical funding for research, and ultimately enhance outcomes for endocrine patients.

To assist the endocrine community in concentrating its efforts over the upcoming year, ESE and the ESE Foundation have published a leaflet with individual patient stories and a calendar.

The hashtag BecauseHormonesMatter will be used on social media by those taking part in European Hormone Day in order to generate momentum for campaigns to increase awareness of endocrine health and disease in Europe. ESE encourages the use of this hashtag on related awareness days.
