EDI Hosts Policy Dialogue On Effect Of Climate Change

Provinces have been advised by the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) to get ready for extreme climate events like heat waves, snowmelt, land slides, flash floods, forest fires, and cyclones.

All provincial governments have been notified in writing of the extraordinary measures that must be taken to prepare for these extreme climate events between April and October.

All disaster management (DM) authorities and stakeholders have received regionally specific alerts and advisories from NDMA in order to make timely, proactive preparations.

It has been requested that the Space and Upper Atmosphere Research Commission (SUPRACO) and Pakistan Metrological Department (PMD) continuously assess the likely impact of these developments on river flows downstream in the water reservoirs and produce monitoring reports on a biweekly basis for changes in glacier melt vulnerable “glacier lake outburst flood” (GLOF) sites.

Along with being informed of the PDMA, Sindh, Balochistan, and Gilgit-Baltistan (GB) were also informed of PMD’s forecast for higher temperatures in northern regions and along the coastal belt from May to July.

Additionally, the PMD issued a rain-thunderstorm forecast for May 22–26, prompting the NDMA to issue an advisory alert to all relevant federal and provincial departments on Sunday to ensure disaster preparedness measures.

According to the advisory report, the PMD predicted that a westerly wave was likely to enter the western and upper parts of the country on May 22 and that it would likely last the entire week, up until May 26, bringing rain with sporadic gaps.

This weather system is expected to affect Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK), Great Britain (GB), Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP), and Punjab from May 22 to May 26. Additionally, Sargodha, Mianwali, Layyah, Khushab, Bhakkar, Faisalabad, Jhang, T T Singh, Sheikhupura, Nankana, Gujranwala, Mandi Bahauddin, Narowal, Sialkot, Kasur, Pakpattan, Okara, Sahiwal, Lahore, R.Y. Khan, Bahawal (ICT) and Sindh and Balochistan from May 24 to May 22.
