University of Ghana Ranked Best in Ghana

The University of Ghana has been ranked as the best university in Ghana and second-best in West Africa in the 2023 edition of the Global 2000 list by the Center for World University Rankings (CWUR). The university was also considered part of the top 6.1 percent of world-class universities by the CWUR.

The rankings were based on seven objective indicators across four areas: education quality, alumni employment, faculty quality, and research performance. The University of Ghana’s impressive performance in these areas solidified its reputation as an intellectual hub and provider of high-quality education.

The university’s Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Nana Aba Appiah Amfo, expressed joy at the ranking and attributed the success to the resilience, dedication, and hard work of the faculty, staff, and students. She said the achievement reflected the university’s collective commitment to excellence and the relentless pursuit of knowledge.

The feat, she stressed, was a source of immense pride for the nation, as it had long been regarded as a beacon of higher education. She noted that the university had and would continue to nurture generations of leaders, scholars, and professionals, who contributed significantly to the socio-economic development of the country and beyond.

The CWUR is a non-profit organization that publishes the academic ranking of global universities. The ranking is based on seven objective indicators:

  • Number of alumni winning Nobel Prizes and Fields Medals
  • Number of highly cited researchers
  • Number of publications in top journals and conferences
  • Number of books published
  • Number of international students and faculty
  • Faculty/student ratio
  • Financial resources

The CWUR ranking is different from other university rankings in that it does not rely on surveys or university data submissions. Instead, the ranking is based on objective data that is publicly available. This makes the CWUR ranking a more reliable and accurate measure of a university’s academic performance.

The CWUR has been publishing the academic ranking of global universities since 2012. The ranking started out as a project in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia with the aim of rating the top 100 world universities. In 2019, the ranking expanded to list the top 2000 out of nearly twenty thousand universities worldwide, making it the largest academic ranking of global universities.

The CWUR rankings are based on objective indicators that are not subject to manipulation by universities. This makes them a more reliable and accurate measure of university performance than rankings that rely on surveys or university data submissions.

The University of Ghana’s ranking in the CWUR is a significant achievement and a testament to the university’s commitment to excellence. The university’s continued success will depend on its ability to attract and retain top talent, invest in research and innovation, and provide a world-class education to its students.
