Syed Umaid Ahmed, a Ph.D. Scholar at FAST-NUCES in Karachi, has recently finished working on a project on animal biometrics that aims to identify animals and the owners of those animals.

The biometric verification technology that Syed and his team have created can read and recognise animal blood vessels, eyes, fingerprints, and DNA. Since working with distinctive identifiers that can verify them is challenging, this technology is uncommon for animals.

He worked hard, and Pakistan is now one of the few nations to successfully use this technology. Although it is currently being trained to work with horses, dogs, and other animals as well, its primary focus is on cattle, including cows and buffalo.

The problem of animal theft in Pakistan will be addressed by this project on animal biometrics. This is how it functions. The technology will allow you to identify and verify various animals using just a smartphone app by taking pictures and saving their data, much like fingerprints saved with NADRA.

No two animals have the same nose patterns, just like no two people have the same fingerprints. Through these nose patterns, the aforementioned smartphone app will be able to identify an animal and store its identity in a directory. The app’s algorithm was trained using more than 4000 cattle-related images.

Syed says that the app is about 70% ready and will be launched to the public for free very soon during Eid al-Adha. It is also going to be open-source so anyone can make use of it.
