The European Commission has sent a draft regulation prohibiting the Ukrainian grain imports until September 15, according to the Polish Minister of Agriculture.

In an effort to reduce the overabundance of grain in Bulgaria, Hungary, Poland, Romania, and Slovakia, the EU placed restrictions on the imports of Ukrainian wheat, maize, rapeseed, and sunflower seeds on May 2. These restrictions will remain in effect until June 5. These nations argued that the cheaper grain from Ukraine was making domestic production unprofitable and asked the EU to extend the ban.

Robert Telus posted on Twitter, “We have received from the EC a draught of a new regulation banning the import of four products to the five countries.”

“The draft’s proposed effective date is September 15 of this year.” It’s a draft, but I hope it goes into effect starting tomorrow, he continued.

Any other nation in the 27-nation bloc may purchase Ukrainian wheat, maize, rapeseed, and sunflower seeds. Prior to this, the EU had liberalised all imports from Ukraine in an effort to support Kyiv’s defence against Russian invasion. Grain from Ukraine that couldn’t be exported through its Black Sea ports was routed through the five nations because of the conflict.

At a meeting with the head of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, on Thursday, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy demanded the unconditional removal of all export restrictions on Ukrainian agricultural products.

The European Union (EU) is a supranational political and economic union of 27 member states, most of which are in Europe. It has a total area of 4,233,255 km2 (1,634,469 sq mi) and 447 million people living there.

The EU has been referred to as a sui generis political entity that combines the traits of both a federation and a confederation. In 2022, the EU produced a nominal GDP of US$16.6 trillion, making it the third-largest economy in the world behind China and the United States.
