THE WORLD Environment Day Theme of the year 2013 is “Think. Eat. Save….Think before you eat and help save our environment”. It is an anti-food waste and food loss campaign that encourages us to reduce our food print.

According to the UN Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO), every year 1.3 billion tons of food is wasted.  The problem is especially acute in rich countries, where around 222 million tons of food is wasted each year. This is equivalent to the same amount produced in the sub-Saharan Africa. At the same time, 1 in every 7 people in the world go to bed hungry and more than 20,000 children under the age of 5 die daily from hunger. According to the WFP, nearly half of Pakistans (180 million) people are at risk of going short of food due to a recent surge in world food prices.

In fact, the global food production occupies 25 per cent of all habitable land and is responsible for 70 per cent of fresh water consumption, 80 per cent of deforestation, and 30 per cent of greenhouse gas emissions. It is the largest single driver of biodiversity loss and land-use change. If food is wasted, it means that all the resources and inputs used in the production of all the food are also lost.

Historically, the World Environment Day, first time was established by the United Nations General Assembly in 1972 to mark the opening of the Stockholm Conference on the Human Environment. Another resolution, adopted by the General Assembly the same day, led to the creation of United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP). It is hosted every year by a different city and commemorated with an international exposition through the week of June 5. Through this, the UNEP is able to personalize environmental issues and enable everyone to realize not only their responsibility, but also their power to become agents for change in support of sustainable and equitable development.

Pakistani youth know very well about their rights, they now consider clean environment as their basic right. They just not raise their voice to clean environment but practically they took steps to clean it too and also do work to create awareness among the nation to clean their surroundings. Pakistani nation is not a major pollution contributor compared to other Asian countries. The majority of its people doesnt destroy forests, doesnt wipe out endangered species, doesnt pollute rivers and oceans, and emits essentially no greenhouse gases. We believe that a smaller population would help us to preserve the environment and live within the limit of renewable resources, as part of a comprehensive approach to the environment and sustainability.

The World Environment Day does not only focus on this one particular issue, recognizing that greenhouse gas-driven global warming is a looming and international threat. Air pollution threatens the health of citizens around the world. Water resources are at risk of becoming unusable, and soil contamination and exploitation carry similar risks. All possible measures need to be adopted. Special attention must be given to health and hygienic conditions.

Need of the hour is prefer to grow healthy and chemical fertilizer free food. Conserve excessive for poor and share all healthy resources with needy.  If we monitor and manage the environment properly, we can significantly reduce the number of people suffering with food shortage.  Green living style matters a lot its more near to nature and important most if number of plantation increases it automatically clean air in their surroundings as trees called lungs of environment and mechanically clean all types of pollutants, produce food and reduce poverty.
