STAFF REPORT FSD: The government should formulate sustainable agricultural policies as the country is facing serious threats of food insecurity and water scarcity.


“The third world countries needed to focus on genetically modified crops rather than organic crops to meet increasing food demand of the people,” said University of Agriculture Faisalabad VC Dr Iqrar while talking to a delegation of the 14th Senior Management Course, National Management College.


He said that the university is working on desert agriculture in flora, fauna and livestock sector in Cholistan. In the desert agriculture, there was an opportunity of value addition, he added.


“The countrys total water storage capacity is less than 15MAF whereas we are dumping 105MAF into the sea. If we store the said quantity of water, the country can face the challenge of water scarcity,” said the VC.


He said that 1 million tub-wells were operational in the province, declining the groundwater table.
