Today was the first day of National Workshop on chemical and Biological Laboratory Safety at HEJ-Research Institute, ICCBS, University of Karachi. Prof. Dr. Atta ur Rahmangraced the occasion with his esteemed presence. He appreciated the efforts of NAYS-Pakistan and ASM and delivered the inaugural address. Around 400 participants along with faculty members joined the Inauguration ceremony.


On behalf of American Society for Microbiology,Prof. Dr. Shahana Urooj Kazmielaborated the aims and objectives of the organization. She briefly discussed about the previous activities conducted by ASM and invited young scholars to become a part of this society. As an invited speaker, she talked about CCHF, Dengue and Ebola outbreak and general lab safety levels for various microorganisms.Dr. Muhammad Raza Shahtalked about chemical and biological safety and security in ICCBS. Dr. Rizwana Wasifcoordinator Pakistan Red crescent Society, joined the event and nicely explained the first aid in emergency situation.A practical demonstration was observed as well.


Todays concluding lecture was on emergency response and a fire fighting drill conducted byDr. Tariq Saifullah, Trainee coordinator, Civil Defence Headquarters, Government of Sindh, Pakistan. Participants interacted enthusiastically in both the hands-on training.


Tomorrow, there will be 3 lectures related to Biological safety and one for chemical safety. 6 International participants also joined the workshop.


In future NAYS Pakistan will arrange similar events in other cities of Pakistan as well.
