STAFF REPORT LHR: Interdisciplinary Research Centre in Biomedical Materials (IRCBM), COMSATS IIT, Lahore, has signed a “Collaborative Agreement” with the University of Sheffield, UK, to develop a collaborative fellowship programme in the areas of Biomaterials, Dental Materials and Tissue Engineering.

This has been termed indeed a big leap forward to translate lab research into a product that can be used inside hospitals.

These post-doctoral research fellows will work on translational research areas which are expected to result in clinical benefit for patients in Pakistan.

Prof. Sheila MacNeil, Prof. John Haycock and Dr. Ihtesham-ur-Rehman from Department of Materials Science and Engineering, University of Sheffield, visited the IRCBM for the selection of 5 post-doctoral fellows. The Fellows will be working in the areas including Bone replacement materials, Biomaterials for wound healing in burns patients, Biomaterials and tissue engineering for cleft palate repair, Development of biomaterials for treating periodontal disease and Biomaterials/regenerative medicine for repair of nerve damage.

Currently these fellows in Sheffield in for an initial 6-week intense mentorship programme in translational research. Most of the research will be undertake at the IRCBM in CIIT Lahore guided by Materials Science and Engineering senior staff members.

The first batch of the five selected fellow scientists included Dr. Muhammad Yar, Dr. Ather Farooq, Dr. Asma Tufail Shah, Dr. Faiza Sharif, and Dr. Farasat Iqbal.

The research fellows will immensely benefit from the cutting-edge experience of their counterparts in Sheffield University.
