Staff Report Islamabad: Inaugural session of two days International Workshop on LEDs and laser diodes was commenced in Islamabad, in order to celebrate “The International Year of Light (IYL 2015).” The workshop was jointly organized by Pakistan Institute of Engineering and Applied Sciences (PIEAS) and National Institute of Laser and Optronics (NILOP).

The basic purpose of the workshop is to raise awareness about utility of optical technologies to attain sustainable development and how they can provide solutions to worldwide challenges in different fields i.e. energy, education, agriculture, communications and health, stated by Dr. Mushtaq Ahmad, Director NILOP, while addressing to the workshop. He further said that the United Nations has taken the global initiative in this regard. International Year of Light 2015 programs will promote improved public understanding of the central role of light in the modern world while also celebrating noteworthy anniversaries in 2015. There is a long journey of evolution of the optical technology since first study of optics by Ibn Al-Hayyan, 1000 years ago, till discoveries that revolutionized communication and power the Internet today. Highlighting the significance of the emerging area of research, he added that 2014 Nobel Prize winner was honored for the invention of “GaN-based blue light emitting diodes”. That invention has undoubtedly enabled development of bright and energy-saving white light sources.

The workshop aimed to provide an overview of epi-materials and devices from design and simulation to growth, fabrication and characterization of GaN-based LEDs and Laser diodes structures using MBE and MOCVD.

Rana Tanweer Hussain, Federal Minister for Science and Technology and Defense Production, said that the celebration of 2015, as the year of light, will make a great awareness and impact amongst people about the importance of light and utility of optical technologies in their lives. He further stated that the light based technology is aiding mankind in various ways, like its applications are raising the quality of life by reducing child mortality rate, improving maternal health, and combating diseases. He visited various labs at NILOP and showed his interest in the laser land leveler and defense related products. He admired the role of PAEC and NILOP for organizing such an informative event.

Large number of guests including scientists, engineers, students, and professors participated in the event.
