Staff Report ISD: First ever doctorate degree issued by PARC Institute of Advanced Studies in Agriculture (PIASA) was conferred to Sabir Hussain Shah. His area of specialization was Plant Genomics and Biotechnology for development of cold tolerant tomato plant. He has become the forerunner student to receive this degree from the institute. The panel of scientists of National Agriculture Research Center (NARC) evaluated his theses work which was successfully defended by Sabir Hussain Shah.


The core objectives of his study were to grow tomatoes in open field conditions of Pakistan throughout the year. This will be advantageous for tomato growers to render a substantial output to national economy and development.


Dr. M. Azeem Khan, DG NARC and Rector PIASA while speaking on the occasion said, “Pakistan is spending about Rs.11 billion on the import of tomatoes from the neighboring country, adding that if the scientists successfully introducegenetically modifiedtomatoes that are cold and heat resistant, it would help produce huge tomato crop in the country and help the country to reduce dependence on imports. NARC is currently providing training farmers from all across the country on tomato-farming which would help them boost their crop production.”
