STAFF REPORT ISB: The workshop in connection to “Potential of Value Addition and Health Benefits of Indigenous Herbal Wealth and Functional Foods” was organized by Pakistan Council for Science and Technology (PCST). The workshop was intended to appraise numerous benefits of functional foods and indigenous herbal wealth with special context to value addition.


Talking to the workshop, Anwar-ul-Hassan Gilani, Chairman PCST, warmly welcomed the participants. He said that the countries like China had focused on value addition of their Herbal wealth and taken utmost measures to extract maximum benefit out of their functional food and herbal wealth. He further said that Pakistan had rich herbal wealth that is being exported on paltry prices. It is the apt time that this sector should be developed for economic uplifting of country.


Federal Minister of Ministry of Science and Technology (MoST), Rana Tanveer Hussain participated in workshop as chief guest. He said while addressing in the workshop that this event will render numerous benefits in highlighting this crucial issue and value addition of indigenous food products will impart positive impacts on economic development of country. Rana Tanveer appreciated the contributions and efforts of PCST in highlighting and identification of critical issues and prompting government to take note for sustainable development.


He further said, “We have to chalk out a clear strategy so that our indigenous knowledge base is utilized intelligently and efficiently for economic uplift of the country, as the global herbal supplements and remedies market is estimated to reach US $ 115 billion by 2020, whereas functional foods market is expected to reach US$ 305 billion by 2020, he added.”
