A delegation of Chinese officials and Pakistani scientists discussed the development of production of a new variety of rice at the University of Karachi (UoK) at the International Center for Chemical and Biological Sciences (ICCBS).

Director General China National Rice Research Institute (CNRRI) of Hangzhou – China, Prof Dr. Cheng Shihua along with the six-member Chinese delegation visited the ICCBS-UOK and had a meeting with Prof Dr. Atta-ur-Rahman, former Federal Minister for Science & Technology and ex-Chairman Higher Education Commission Pakistan and Prof Dr. Muhammad Iqbal Choudhary Director ICCBS.

The meeting is held at the University of Karachi, Dr. Panjwani Center for Molecular Medicine, and Drug Research (PCMD),

Prof Dr. Zhuang Jieyun, Prof Dr. Wu Jianli, Prof Dr. Wang Kejian, Dr. Luo Ju and Zheng Youchuan, were the part of the Chinese delegation that has visited to see research facilities setup at the ICCBS.

Prof Atta-ur-Rahman, Prof Iqbal Choudhary, the rice expert Dr. Fida Abbasi of Hazara University, and the Chinese officials highlighted the importance of research I development of improved high yield, disease resistant and high-quality varieties of rice in the meeting. They made a commitment to enhance collaboration in the field of research and development between the scientists of the countries. They also highlighted that China is part of the largest rice producers while Pakistan is the producer of world’s best varieties of rice.

They also added that Sino-Pakistan Hybrid Rice Research Center is part of the objective for collaboration in research for the development of new high yielding and high-quality rice. The research center has two branches at ICCBS-UoK and another in China.

They consented in the meeting that Chinese scientists offer training to ICCBS’s scholar in rice breeding and production of high-quality hybrid rice seed. They have also consented to improve the relationship between the two institutions and also develops the academic exchange in research. The focus of the institution will be on solving significant scientific and technical problems in rice production by basic and applied research.

A seminar was arranged after a meeting where all five members of the Chinese delegation and Pakistani scientists presented their research.
