Among the biotech based crops, Pakistan ranked 7th among 26 countries of the world. It is successful in achieved acceptance of Insect Resistant (IR) biotech cotton grown on 2.9 million hectares. Global Status of Commercialization Biotech/GM Crops – 2016 reported the aforementioned facts at the International Centre for Chemical and Biological Sciences (ICCBS) of Karachi University. The investors are up to an economic boost by using biotech varieties of Maize.

International Service for Acquisition of Agri- Biotech Applications have prepared the report that has listed the numbers of crops, global trends, future predictions, distribution, and adoption of biotech crops in the last year. The report has highlighted countries that are growing crops through biotechnology. According to the report, IR cotton adoption has raised to 97% from 75% in 2010 indicating satisfaction of farmers for BT technology with hope for replication and acceptance of biotech maize in Pakistan.

The farmers have started growing biotech cotton crops in 2010. Now with increased adoption, the growers of BT crops are 725,000 in 2016. Biotech crops have had a significant impact on the economy through enhancing agricultural sector. The economy of US has thrived due to biotech crops to the US $ 398 million in 2015 and the US $ 4.3 billion from 2010 to 2015. The report has also thrown light on factors that were hampering the growth of biotech crops i.e., old IR technology, the supply of low-quality IR cotton varieties, increasing the threat of pink bollworms.
