Agriculture sector in Pakistan faces a number of major challenges which need to overcome with the time. Agriculture performance in Pakistan has been very slow in recent years due to several reasons. Fish-farming sector was completely and continuously ignored in the past and the country could not benefit from this sector which had the potential of earning billions of rupees.

PM gave go-ahead to fish-farming

Prime Minister Imran Khan gave go-ahead to the Ministry of National Food Security and Research for the promotion of all agricultural sectors including the fish-farming was the foremost priority of the present government.

Agricultural new policy draft also circulates. The present government’s 100 days agenda, a complete plan was being come up to promote fish-farming, shrimp-farming, and catch culture in the country.

The government would take all possible measures to facilitate the people related with fish-farming so as to benefit from the latent of this sector. Strengthening bilateral cooperation with Pakistan’s close friend China in the agricultural sector and benefiting from their expertise was also part of the government’s priorities.

The promotion of shrimp-farming, catch culture and trout-farming in Gilgit Baltistan and Azad Kashmir would not only help meet the country’s food requirements but would also create gainful job opportunities for the people through this low-expense business.

Agriculture performance slow growth rate due to technological innovations; problems with quality, quantity and timeliness of supply; limited investment; pest and livestock disease problems; and limited amounts of credit for agricultural production and processing.

Enhancement of 60,000 acres of control area of small and mini dams and water conservation in arid areas a large coastal line of 1100 kilometers which had huge potential of fish-farming besides utilizing the immense barren and wet lands for shrimp-farming, this sector could be revolutionized.

The ultimate aim to transform the agriculture policy would create a modern, efficient and diversified agricultural sector that can ensure a stable and sufficient supply of basic food supplies for the country’s population, and provide high quality products to its industries for a healthy life.
