Agronomic strategies need of the hour

STAFF REPORT FBD: In order to ensure food security agricultural scientists desperately need to devise new agronomic strategies by utilising innovative technologies keeping in view the rapidly increasing population and decreasing water and soil resources in the country.
“We did not prioritise agricultural sector in accordance with the international standards since 80s onward that is why we are lagging behind in productivity,” said Waseem Mukhtar, Secretary Agriculture Government of Punjab, while addressing the participants of Deans, Directors meeting of University of Agriculture, Faisalabad (UAF).
He said that Pakistan is facing agricultural productivity challenge due to lack of attention and resources for this important sector. He urged the scientists to develop innovative solutions for the betterment of small farmers who are facing many difficulties for livelihood.
The Secretary Agriculture lauded the role of UAF for bringing the Green Revolution by developing new varieties and trained manpower during 1960 and this should be replicated as Pakistan has to feed a major chunk of population of the region in future.
In his remarks Prof. Dr Iqrar Ahmad Khan, UAF VC, said that the university is facing financial constraints in order to provide affordable education to the deprived segment of society.
He added that the university is pursuing modern technological advancement on renewable energy, water efficiency and bio technology in order to equip human resource with modern technology in befitting manners.
