Biorisk Management added in DVM Curriculum
Consultation on Biorisk Management (BRM) with Sandia National Laboratories (SNL) USA at Columbo, Sri Lanka by a delegation of Dairy Science Park (DSP), The University of Agriculture, Peshawar, Pakistan has been completed. Mr. Arif Yousaf, Special Assistant to CM on Law/Convener Task Force on Sustainable Development Goals Government of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa has led the delegation along with Prof M Subhan Qureshi Chief Patron DSP, Prof Nazir Ahmad Dean FAHVS, Prof Umer Sadique, Dr. Shoaib Sultan, Dr. SB Khan, Dr. Farhan A Khan, Dr. Hamayun UAP, Prof Ghazala Yasmeen VC WUM, Prof Azam Kakar World Bank, Mrs. Javed Farmer Sausage Co, Irfan Qureshi and Sadia Qureshi DSP, M Inam SSBU Sheringal, Dr. Arshad PVMC, Prof M Rabbani UVAS and Dr. Tayyab KMU. The Sandia team included Dr. Melissa Finley, Mr. Waleed Joyan, and Ms. Iris.
Biorisk Management courses in DVM Syllabus was introduced for the first time by SNL-DSP collaboration. The consultative workshop of three days was held in Colombo, Sri Lanka.
BRM is a new concept of biosafety and biosecurity, protecting Lab, workers, and environment from pathogens, respectively. Semester 2-9 were identified among 8 semesters containing BRM related courses. DVM graduates will have a more expertise in BRM to safe and secure animal products, zoonosis control and public health after the introduction of this course. Postgraduate syllabus for General, Veterinary, and Medical universities have also been developed. AUP, Peshawar has established a Centre of Excellence of BRM to impart BRM courses in the region.
DSP was getting help from SNP in curriculum development and four meetings have been held in Amsterdam, Dubai, Bangkok, and Phuket for the last two years. MoU for collaboration was signed by Prof Mukhtar Ahmad, Chairman Higher Education Commission of Pakistan and initiated with Khyber Medical University, Peshawar. The MoU aims to develop quality control standards for introduction into local livestock production, processing, marketing, and services network, and for protecting public health. Women University Mardan and Shaheed Benazir Bhutto University, Sheringal on Biorisk Management and Entrepreneurship have signed 2 other MoU.
Prof. M Subhan Qureshi said while concluding the session that completing consultation on integrating Biorisk Management introduced in DVM curricula at Pakistani Universities. He gladly mentioned that SNL agenda on BRM has combined with DSP agenda for food security, health security and economic empowerment of the youth, accepted by the United Nations as SDG Action 9671. Postgraduate courses on BRM at UAP, KMU, Baluchistan University and BUITMS has been introduced while in process in WUM and SBBU. Pakistan Veterinary Medical Council was on Board for 5th consultative meeting and productive outcome.
Mr. Arif Yousaf referred that at present government of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa was focusing on legislation for giving some relief to the common people. He was attending DSP-SNL consultation through 3 consecutive meetings and was inspired for forwarding the biorisk management agenda. He stated that a Task Force on Dairy Science Park has been suggested and a summary has been submitted to the Chief Minister Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, for small businesses and consumer health. It will hopefully, access to the consumers to Halal and Hygienic food along with entrepreneurship development for the unemployed youth. Mr. Arif Yousaf invited the participants to the 4th International Conference and Industrial Exhibition on Dairy Science Park at Konya Turkey. Mr. Azam Kakar awarded traditional souvenirs to the delegates. Sandia Team distributed certificates of participation to the DSP delegates.
