STAFF REPORT ISB:A session on climate change titled as United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) Kyoto Protocol and Beyond was jointly organized by COMSATS Institute of Information Technology (CIIT) and Pakistan Academy of Sciences (PAS). The event was aimed to address various grave aspects of climate change in context of science diplomacy.


CIIT Climate Change Ambassador, Dr Athar Hussain apprised that Pakistan adds less than one percent in the overall global carbon emission to atmosphere.


Dr Hussain enumerated the role of United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) and the part of Kyoto Protocol adopted in 1997 by various countries.


He proposed that the way forward for the global community to meet the challenges of climate change is to make sure the frequent dialogue process between stakeholders to formulate and ensure execution of GHG emission resilient policies at various levels.


A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between CIIT and The World Academy of Sciences (TWAS) was signed to cooperate in science diplomacy.


COMSATS Executive Director Dr Qureshi in his address commended the efforts of PAS in promotion of science activities in general and science diplomacy in particular. He further remarked that Science and Diplomacy are interlinked entities and both can science can play a pivotal role in bolstering diplomacy across the borders.




The session was attended by about 100 participants, representatives from public and private organizations, environmental scientists, academicians, students etc.
