Imparting education or minting money

Pakistan’s economy mostly depends on World Bank and IMF loans. Our rupee is around Rs107 to a dollar while the value of India’s currency is twice as good as ours.

Even where the standard of education and educating the nation is concerned, we are far behind India.

An expo guide for shaping the future was held recently, inviting expecting students for registration.

However, the tuition fees for academic year 2014-15 was Rs700,000. Only the rich could afford such a large amount.

Privatising vocational institutes

ACCORDING to a media report, FPCCI has proposed establishment of vocational institutes in private sector. However, it is not clear if this suggestion is backed by detailed analysis or studies as to the physical infrastructure conditions of all these institutes. It is also not clear on what basis the FPCCI and possibly other chambers would be willing to take over management of these institutes for improved vocational training.

The proposed transfer of vocational training from the

Focusing on applied research

HERE ARE three types of institutions for basic research: master’s programmes, art and humanity. Basic research institutions focus on research where the fruits of prosperity come after 40 to 50 years. These institutions produce PhDs as faculty members in these institutes take young scholars under their wings for basic research. There is a need for research labs, infrastructure, and finances to convert such inventions into commercially viable products and services.

The faculty members of

Depleting fish resources and malnutrition

ACCORDING TO reports, Pakistan ranks 50th among the nations whose marine fish resources are most vulnerable due to climate change and ocean acidification as a result of reduced sea water PH and rise in temperature (climatic change) induced by industrial growth and pollution.

This threat is directly related to high CO2 emissions in the environment and unless steps are taken to control it, the people will soon find fish and seafood unable to meet their nutritional requirements.

Unfair means during NTS exams

THE WRITTEN test conducted recently by the NTS for recruitment of teachers in the Sindh education department was marred by serious mismanagement and malpractices. Candidates themselves confirmed the use of mobile phones for cheating. The test conducting staff was in most cases found too inexperienced to supervise the test smoothly and transparently. In some instances, the staff themselves were involved in facilitating their favourites. It is unfortunate that such a crucial task of screening

Environmental flows downstream of Kotri Barrage

THE INTERNATIONAL Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) had recommended 22 years ago that 27maf water must flow downstream of Kotri annually and at least 6,000 cusecs all the time. These figures were probably recommended in 1991, in response to the Water Accord 1991. The old IUCN figures would no longer be valid now because during these years a number of factors have come up, which impact the environmental flows, requiring a substantial upward increase in the IUCN figures.

Solid waste for generating power

SOLID WASTE management has become a nightmare in Pakistan. Municipalities are equipped with centuries-old and outdated methods as they lift only 60 per cent of the waste generated in cities. In the absence of professionalism and proper waste disposal system, most of the garbage lifted from cities is crudely dumped in open spaces. Such dumps spread all sorts of diseases which badly affect health of the residents of the city.Karachi, with an estimated population of 20 million, generates around 12,

Solar energy and climate

ACCORDING TO the news, a villager in Keti Bundar town of Thatta district got installed a small solar panel system in his one-room hut, under a donor-funded programme. He is now using two energy savers to light up his room. The use of clean energy in the off-grid rural areas of Sindh has many benefits. In addition to the better quality of life due to the availability of electricity, the use of solar-powered cookers (solar energy-electricity-heat) for cooking can provide major tangible benefits.

In SIM spoofing the customer SIM may be used illegally for calls and text messages, without his knowledge, though the SIM is active and in the use of the customer.Obviously, it is not possible for the common man to do SIM spoofing. Climate change and vigilance

WE ALL know that pollution causes global warming which needs to be arrested forthwith if we want to protect our marine life and coastal resources. It has been observed that industries located near rivers and sea release their polluted/ contaminated water in rivers or sea without treatment. This is the main cause of depletion of marine life. I think that Pakistan Environmental Protection Agency and respective provincial agencies are keeping their eyes closed on this very serious issue. Discharge
