STAFF REPORT LHR: Punjab being the biggest province of Pakistan is playing a leading role to resolve the energy crisis so that the whole country and economy could get benefit from the energy produced from coal and other resources.

These views were expressed by the experts session on Surge in Investment in Punjab – Government announcements and expectations, arranged here recently.

The panelists were Abdul Khaliq Khan, SM Tanveer, Dr Arshad, Dr Nadia Tahir, Jalal Hassan and Syed Tanzeem Naqvi while hosted by Sikandar Hameed Lodhi.

Abdul Khaliq said that energy crisis was the top of all the issues faced by the country while hydel generation was the best solution to control it and the importance of Kalabagh Dam could not be ignored. He said Bhasha Dam was technically a sound project which would irrigate Bannu and DI Khan lands.

SM Tanveer called for a comprehensive policy for attracting investment in the energy sector of Punjab and the neighbouring country coal expertise could be used. India has been generating energy from coal due to which cheap energy is available for its industries.

Dr Arshad said coal was available in four districts of Punjab, Jhelum, Chakwal, Khushab and Mianwali and spread over almost 1,150 square kilometer areas, out of which 95 percent remained untapped.
