Staff Repot ISB: A seminar on “World Environment Day” was conducted by Capital Development Authority aiming at discussing climate change impacts that are continuously hurling on the country causing serious damage to biodiversity, infrastructure and also sabotaging the efforts of sustainable development.


Planning Commission Water Resources Chief Naseer Ahmed Gillani said while addressing to the seminar that Pakistan was facing a mammoth loss of around $24 billion as a penalty of climate change and environmental degradation adversity.


He laid stress to instigate serious efforts and play our part for environmental conservation and particularly energy conservation so to efficiently utilize the natural resource of Pakistan.


CDA Member Environment, Syed Mustafain Kazmi was present on the occasion, he highlighted the contribution of CDA in environmental conservation and said, “CDA had planted more than 0.5 million plants in various areas of the capital in collaboration with educational institutions.”


He urged that collaborations with multiple public and private organizations working for sustainable development and natural conservation will account for environmental conservation of the capital and protect it from the adverse impacts of climate change therefore linkages must be strengthened.


Chairman Pakistan Agriculture Research Council (PARC) Dr Iftikhar Ahmad presided over the seminar and said that global climate had changed dramatically over the last century and Pakistan is extremely vulnerable to it amid due to population bulge, rapidly increasing urbanization, and deforestation. Pakistan is facing serious food security issues due to climate change impacts on agriculture, which is resulting in low productivity, crop failures, extreme floods, droughts and cyclone events, he added.


He appreciated the Capital Development Authority, particularly the Environment Wing for launching new plantation projects, environment conservation activities and launching the bio remediation projects in Islamabad.


Ahmad Kamal representing the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) stressed on need of enhancement of capacity and said that keeping in view the intensity of climate change impacts we need build resource to prepare ourselves for the future challenges pertaining to environmental conservation.


National University of Science and Technology (NUST) Environmental Sciences Chairman Dr Imran Hashmi appreciated the efforts of the CDA for keeping the environment of capital city up to the mark and green. He stressed the need for having a sophisticated solid waste disposal mechanism in the city.
