GEF to plant 20m moringa trees across Sindh
The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP)’s Global Environment Facility (GEF) announced to plant 20 million saplings of Moringa plant in different cities, towns, major highways and villages in Sindh. Sindh needs more moringa trees to cope with malnutrition because it suffered a lot due to climate change.
Global Environment Facility ‘GEF’ established nurseries in many different cities like Keenjhar Lake in Thatta district, Badin, Tando Muhammad Khan, Jhirk town in Thatta, Hyderabad, Makli, Sujawal and Jamshoro to kick-start this plantation campaign.
Approx 20 million plantation drive which will be ready by the end of november and distributed among organizations and farmers working in the rain-fed and agriculture areas of province in order to moderate the special effects of climate change and increase the province’s forest cover.
Looking forward to moringa specie that is not only the plantation drive to secure the climate change it also had a health benefit because considered as a food tree used to make medicines which treat anemia arthritis,joint pain, asthma, cancer, diabetes, constipation, diarrhea, epilepsy and so many other diseases which is the mandatory thing for surviving.
Moringa most important feature is that it require less water and grow upto five to six feet as, we have water shortage so it’s also good for that crisis, explained by the GEF’s National Program Manager Masood Ahmed Lohar.
Besides planting the Moringa trees, GEF has also introduced Moringa leaf tablets for which a license has also been acquired from Drug Regularity Authority of Pakistan.
