STAFF REPORT IBD: The government has strictly directed mobile phone operators to end night packages, Minister of State for Information Technology and Telecommunications Anusha Rehman has recently told the Senate.

Responding to a motion moved by Senator Tahir Hussain Mashhadi, the minister said that the night packages of the mobile phone companies in Pakistan are destroying the countrys culture and cultural values.

The mobile companies must end this practice, she said.

Minister of State for Frontier Regions and Kashmir Affairs Barjees Tahir said that the government had directed the mobile companies to end night packages, but the companies had gone to the Supreme Court against the decision of Pakistan Telecom Authority (PTA). The SC has, however, not granted them stay.

It is to be mentioned here that the other stakeholders – parents and civil society organizations – have expressed their grave concern over the ongoing mobile phone night packages available on cheap rates, as they are not only destroying the cultural values but also the main reason behind the declining graph of education among young generation.

According to them, these mobile companies are directly contributing towards fast evaporating interest in health activities of the young generation but also tantamount to wasting their rich time of studies.

They have demanded of the state authorities and the Supreme Court to ensure stoppage of these night packages of these companies who are just focusing only on their revenue graph and ignoring the youth, who are their future.
