The Global Young Scientists Summit (GYSS) 2016 was held at Singapore University of Technology and Design (SUTD) from January 17-22, 2016 with the motive of advancing science, creating technologies for a better world. The event was organized by the National Research Foundation (NRF) Singapore since 2012 to inspire PhD students and post-doctoral fellows to pursue their scientific dreams.


The inauguration ceremony was graced with the presence of guest of honour Mr. Teo Chee Hean; Deputy Prime Minister and Coordinating Minister for National Security and Chairman, National Research Foundation Singapore, along with Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn of the Kingdom of Thailand. Her Royal Highness had also attended the opening ceremonies of the GYSS in 2013, 2014 and 2015.


Various lectures were delivered by 13 noble laureates in the field of Chemistry: Ada Yonath (2009), Arieh Warshel (2013), Ei-ichi Negishi (2010), Physiology and Medicine; Haraldzur Hausen (2008), John Robin Warren (2005), Sir Richard Roberts (1993), Sir Timothy Hunt (2001), Physics; Sir Anthony Leggett (2003), Carlo Rubbia (1984), David Gross (2004), Gerard t Hooft (1999), Jerome Friedman (1990) and Serge Haroche (2012). Besides these highly informative lectures, 08 lectures were delivered by Field Medallists Cédric Villani (2010), Stephen Smale (1966); Millennium Technology Prize holders Michael Grätzel (2010), Stuart Parkin (2014) andTuring Award holders (sometimes referred to as the “Nobel Prize” of Computing) Andrew Chi-Chih Yao (2000), Leslie Lamport (2013), Leslie Valiant (2010) andRichard Karp (1985).


Three Panel discussions were arranged and moderated by President NUS Prof Tan Chorh Chuan, President SUTD Prof Thomas Magnanti and President SMU Prof Arnoud De Meyer with panel of all worthy speakers on The PhD Degree: Commodity or CommonPlace?, What will the world be like in 50 years? and Science Education and Society. GYSS@one-north 2016 was not only comprised of plenary lectures and group discussions with speakers but have also set up site visits of city galleries, Water reclamation point, Gardens and barrages, cultural programmes, visit to various laboratories in NUS, SUTD, A*Star, CREATE, NTU and SMU.


On the final day of the summit, eight selected young researchers presented their proposals for making Singapore a sustainable and liveable city. The concluding ceremony was honoured by the esteemed presence of Dr. Tony Tan Keng Yam; President of the Republic of Singapore and Patron GYSS. He highlighted the need for a collaborative and interdisciplinary approach to tackle the most urgent issues facing the world today. Closing reception of the event was arranged at the Campus Centre (foyer of Auditorium) where around 300 scientists under the age of 35 and 21 eminent mentors along with GYSS higher officials enjoyed group discussions over a grand feast.
