HEC, UNDP starts Fellowship on Federalism

STAFF REPORT ISB: The Higher Education Commission in collaboration with the UNDP has launched the Indigenous M.Phil Fellowship and offered 12 Fellowships for study in Pakistani universities and degree awarding institutions. An award ceremony has recently been held at the HEC premises Islamabad for the recipients of HEC-UNDP Fellowship on Federalism. HEC Chairman Prof. Dr. Mukhtar Ahmed was the chief guest and Marc-Andre Franche, Country Director UNDP, was the guest of honour.As many as 11 out of total of 36 applicants have been awarded the Fellowship. The scholars from Punjab, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Balochistan and Gilgit-Baltistan were selected on merit.
In his remarks, Dr. Mukhtar Ahmed hoped that after doing their research on issues like 18th Amendment, Fiscal federalism, Decentralization and Local Government in Pakistan, the scholars will be able to contribute to these subjects at the national level. He assured the scholars of the Commissions support in further studies if they come up with quality research work.
Marc-Andre Franche said that study of Federalism has gained significance at the global level. He said that creation of knowledge is imperative for sustaining Federalism, adding that indigenous research is crucial for that purpose.He also mentioned that with the same objective, HEC-UNDP Fellowship on Federalism has been launched.
Giving a comparative perspective, Marc said that UNDP is committed to support decentralization in Pakistan, he added.
