Staff Report KHI: The International Centre for Chemical and Biological Sciences (ICCBS), University of Karachi (UoK) has set a benchmark at international level by using air conditioning plant (200 Tons) at zero electricity cost for generation of energy.
The cost effective, self power generation system set up by ICCBS not only fulfils energy requirements efficiently but also provide an eco friendly solution, said Dr. Muhammad Iqbal Chaudhary, Director ICCBS-UoK while addressing to meeting held last week at H.E.J. Research Institute of Chemistry, UoK.
The power requirement and its generation were considered as one of the most serious issue of recent time. He reiterated that the power requirements of the developing countries, especially in Pakistan, were rising noticeably, whereas the infra-structure of power generation was not improving accordingly, he said.
He further added that ICCBS had set up this system just to keep the highly sophisticated research equipments save from the dire consequences of power failure or load shedding. The ICCBS is regarded as one of the finest research establishments of the developing world.
The co-generation plant consists of a heat recovery system, which produces hot water through jacket water and exhaust gases heat exchangers, he said and added that this hot water was used for producing chilled water, which is enough for complete air conditioning (200 Tons) of a large research building of Dr. Panjwani Centre for Molecular Medicine and Drug Research (PCMD). He avowed that this had not only saved substantial energy cost but also minimized the loss of heat, and released of non-green gases from air conditioning plant.
