Integration of Final Year Project to Industrial Sector
Electrical Engineering is the major filed of engineering disciplines in Pakistan. In capital Islamabad there are 25 Engineering institutes accredited with Pakistan Engineering Counsel. Thousand of graduates are qualifying their engineering degree and creating pressure on national economy annually. It is quite challenging for sate institutions to build up job opportunities for thousands of graduates accomplishing their degrees.
Singapore ranks 5th on the UN Human Development Index and the 3rd highest GDP per capita. It is ranked highly in education, healthcare, life expectancy, quality of life, personal safety and housing. Singapore traditionally has one of the lowest unemployment rates among developed countries. The unemployment rate did not exceed 4% from 2005 to 2014, hitting highs of 3.1% in 2005 and 3% during the 2009 global financial crisis, it fell to 1.8% in the first quarter of 2015. 16% of total GDP which $508.449 billion is comes from Electronic industry in Singapore.
Final Year Project (FYP) is one of the integral parts of engineering discipline. It cover all aspects of Electrical Engineering fields including Power and Energy, Communication, Electronics and control stream. This is a project or academic task that must be accomplished individually by every undergraduate students of engineering program in order to obtain the attributions to graduate. In this context, the Final Year Project plays a crucial role in the teaching-learning process. It is also a way of identifying the ability of the student to perform an industrial project or applied research linked to the knowledge discipline. So this exercise can be considered as a motivation for the students because it allows them choose methods, tools and make decisions during its development.
In Pakistan no proper ways is adopting while exaction of FYP in engineering disciplines. Selection of final year project is completely depend on student interest, student and teacher coordination based on their skills and creativity in innovative technology and coordination with professional of industry. Integration of Engineering project is obligatory to meet the demand for engineers skilled in various disciplines, combining aspects from traditional engineering studies and liberal arts. The demand arises from the current state of industry, where both the products manufactured and the plants which make the products are progressing towards greater diversity and sophistication. Recent studies had shown concern in both Canada and in the United States that engineering graduates were not well-prepared for many of today’s multi-disciplinary and project-based workplaces. Several committees have been formed to study this and have published some material. One Canadian study was done by the Canadian Academy of Engineering and two of its main conclusions were:
- Engineering faculties should ensure that breadth of learning, beyond the technical aspects of the specialist engineering discipline, is a major thrust in engineering education.
- The engineering curriculum should emphasize problem-solving, design, and the development of the learning skills of their students.
Currently Pakistan has been declared as “Full Signatory” of the Washington Accord (WA), a highest prestigious international forum of International Engineering Alliance in its General Assembly Meeting held in USA. Moreover there are lot of challenges for sustaining this position by implantation of Objective Based Education to achieve 12 features of engineering called as Program Learning Outcomes (PLO) to meet the international stands. FYP project can be commercialized to boost the national economy by collaboration of academia and industry. Comsats institute of information technology play significant role by establishing Incubation Centre in Islamabad. National ICT R&D pay appraisable efforts by arranging National Competition of FYP to realized the students their significance. Media channel can play considerable rule by highlighting and prompting the innovative idea and can attract international investor in field of Science & Technology.
