Int’l Day of Disabled Persons saw in Pakistan
International Day of Persons with Disabilities was observed in Pakistan like other parts of the world. In Pakistan, only 0.48 % disabled persons are registered conferring to 6th Population and Housing Census 2017.
United Nations General Assembly proclaimed in 1992 to observe the annual observance of the International Day of Disabled Persons on December 3. The day aims to promote rights and well-being of persons with disabilities.
The Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities approved in 2006. The agenda was also included in the implementation of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development have a slogan that pledges to “leave no one behind”. “Transformation towards sustainable and resilient society for all” was the theme of the day this year.
Salman Siddiqui, being visually impaired, believes in fearlessness and solid self-discipline. He is doing his M. Phil now. in Mass Communication from University of Central Punjab. He got a position in the parliament as a web-based social media assistant. “Attempt to change perceptions about disabled persons, do not hesitate to converse with such people, be friendly and help them to show their best at all levels,” he said.
The disabled persons include visually impaired persons (VIPS), visually impaired children, mentally challenged children, hearing impaired children, physically disabled children, and slow learner children.
According to The Pakistan Society for the Rehabilitation of the Disabled (PSRD), Muhammad Ali, 16-year-old who lives in Lahore and has no siblings. He got a speech therapy at PSRD. But now after receiving speech therapy, physiotherapy, and occupational therapy have managed to overcome the probabilities in his life.
According to the Social Welfare Department Annual Report 2016, Nasheman Training Centre for Physically Disabled Children trained 73 children and 41 children were treated at the Treatment, Training, and Rehabilitation Center for the Mentally Retarded Children (Chaman) in 2016.
According to the Special Education Department of the Punjab Government, the department had given 152 laptops to special students from 1st year to 4th year of two degree colleges and around 1902 solar energy panels to students with disabilities.
Salman Siddiqui urged the government to give maximum faculties to disabled persons.
