STAFF REPORT ISB: A delegation from Italy during its recent visit to Pakistan has showed gratification on the working strategy adapted by PARC for the promotion of cultivation of olive in the country and assured cooperation for the development of specialized nurseries for propagation of olive and oil quality laboratory and training of technical manpower.


The delegation led by Dr. Giovanni Totino, DG IAO, Dr. Domenico Bruzzone, Dr. Marco Focacci, and Dr. Guglielmo Giordano extended its cooperation during its meeting with PARC Chairman Dr. Iftikhar Ahmad at the PARC headquarters Islamabad.


Bothe the sides reviewed the performance of the project “Technical assistance and support to line ministries in the agriculture sector with emphasis on olive production-Afghanistan, Nepal and Pakistan”. The major aim of this project is to increase the local production of edible oil by cultivating olive specially to utilize waste lands in Punjab, Khyber Pukhtunkhwa, Balochistan, Gilgit-Baltistan and FATA.


Dr. Iftikhar appreciated the role of Italian government for the promotion and development of agriculture sector in Pakistan specially the efforts in olive sector. He said that now the awareness about olive is increasing in the public and this will obviously help in alleviating poverty and improving socio-economic condition of small farmers in the region.


A regional conference was also announced to be in Pakistan that will help in establishing regional stability between three countries Afghanistan, Nepal and Pakistan.
