Mobile App introduced to stop water theft

Staff Report LHR: Punjab Information Technology Board (PITB) has launched a Mobile App in order to curtail water theft from irrigation channels in Punjab.

Dr. Umar Saif, Chairman PITB said, “Smart monitoring of irrigation water system is a milestone initiative by PITB and Punjab Irrigation Department funded by the World Bank that would help real time data collection with geo-tagged pictorial evidences.”

The advanced system has tendency to restrict water theft, misappropriations and negligences currently prevailing in the irrigation department of Punjab.

He apprised that Punjab had more than 21.0 million acres agriculture land which was irrigated by 3000 irrigation channels out of whom 200-300 channels bear the tale sufferers.

Chairman PITB further said that the application would be used by the Gauge Readers, Baildaars, and Sub-Engineers and all the way to Chief Engineers for monitoring of water theft, maintenance work and development schemes.

He added, “The farmers settled at the end of the channel are unable to find sufficient quantity of allocated water due to its pilferage affected by the farmers settled upstream. The heavy water theft causes grave deficiencies in the agriculture produce as well as large amount of precious fertile lands is getting barren day by day due to want of water.”
