STAFF REPORT ISB: National Database and Registration Authority (NADRA) has closed its CNIC delivery to the applicants doorstep, who were applying through the online portal. However, overseas Pakistanis can still apply for their ID cards online.

The online CNIC Issuance and Renewal Service started in August 2015 to perilous applause and response by Pakistani citizens during the time. In the span of half a year, the service has been indefinitely deferred.

Whereas NADRA has not specified any clarification listing their motives behind the hasty move, maybe the registration authority was incapable to keep-up with the tremendous volume of requests, henceforth the move to suspend the service for the time being.

This move is expected to hurt common Pakistanis as getting an ID card through normal channels is an arduous and time wasting prospect at best. The benefits of the IT and mobile revolution in Pakistan mean nothing if common people cannot be facilitated with the latest technology. For an actual digital Pakistan, NADRAs online CNIC service signified a promise fulfilled, a symbol that Pakistan was acclimatizing to a digital future to better lives of its residents.
