STAFF REPORT KHI: The Cypress Society has conducted its first workshop in collaboration with National Academy of Young Scientists (NAYS) in the Department of Applied Chemistry and Chemical Technology. The seminar titled “SSCL: Spreading Safety Culture in Laboratory” was a programme conducted to highlight and discuss the issues of lab safety and international standards.

The Cypress Society led by Warda Jawaid was founded by students of Department of Applied Chemistry and Chemical Technology, Karachi University.

Syed Qaiser Hasan, HSE (Health Safety Environment) Advisor at United Energy Pakistan, talked about what are Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) and Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS) and discussed its importance. The second speaker, Zeeshan Ansari, Lead Auditor at CISCO, talked about international safety standards ISO 17025. The third speaker, Sikander Khan Sherwani, Trainer at Biosafety Association of Pakistan (BSAP), spoke about Biosafety and precautions and safety measures to prevent spread of harmful or unwanted microorganisms.

Chairman of Applied Chemistry Department, Dr. Mehdi Hasan Kazmi came up next and expressed his amazement at the number of industrial personnel who came to attend the seminar.

Bina Hassan, event coordinator of NAYS for Sindh, appreciated the societys efforts and announced support of NAYS in further programs that would be conducted by the society.

In the end, President NAYS, Aftab Ahmed, was presented a shield by Warda Jawaid and Dr. Mehdi Hasan Kazmi for his cooperation with Cypress.
