NCP ISS_optSTAFF REPORT IBD: The National Centre for Physics (NCP) has an excellent potential to collaborate with Abdus Salam International Centre for Theoretical Physics (ICTP) in the field of scientific development, and ICTP has very deep rooted relationship with NCP and the collaboration between the two organisation will strengthen in the years to come.

A five day International Scientific Spring-2013 (ISS) ended with a commitment and vow that Pakistani young researchers and scientists will continue to play their positive role in best interest of Pakistan. The Fifth International Scientific Spring (ISS) was organized by National Centre for Physics (NCP) in collaboration with Abdus Salam International Centre for Theoretical Physics (ICTP), Trieste, Italy.

Addressing the concluding ceremony Dr. Hamid Saleem, Director General NCP strongly motivated the research community in Pakistan to attempt challenging problems that are essential for the economic stability and development of the country. “I am confident that NCP-ICTP collaboration will strengthen in years to come and will prove very fruitful for the development of science and technology in the region.  It is our sincere wish that this development ultimately will lead to the well-being and prosperity of humankind” he further added.

Dr. Joseph Niemela was very much impressed with the scientific and research activities of young Pakistani researchers.

He said that ICTP will always support NCP in organizing scientific activities with an aim to promote scientific culture in Pakistan. He appreciated the efforts of NCP in organizing such a huge scientific gathering.

More than 20 foreign scientists and researchers along with 400 local participants from all over Pakistan participated and presented their research papers. More than 150 lectures/ presentations and poster were presented by foreign and local speakers during this five day activity. The activity focused some important areas of basic and applied physics. Oral talks, video lectures and posters on specific research topics were presented by the renowned foreign and local scientists/researchers.

Address the occasion Dr. Riffat Mahmood Qureshi, Director NCP said that in fact, it is the second time that International Scientific Spring is being jointly organized by NCP and ICTP. However, the main purpose of holding the ISS is to inspire young students and researchers to do quality research with enthusiasm and present the outcome of their scholarly work among a galaxy of experts in the relevant disciplines for questioning and criticism.

Foreign scientists from different universities of Algeria, China, Egypt, Italy,Iraq, Japan, Malaysia, Saudi Arabia, Sri Lanka, Sweden, Switzerland, Turkey, USA and UAE participated  and presented  their research papers. The activity focused on the core areas of physics and its related fields like Accelerator Physics, Particle Physics, Nanosciences and Plasma Physics. It is worth mentioning that two Professor Harold W. Kroto and Dr. Robert Kurl (Nobel Laureates) also delivered video lectures in this activity followed by question-answer sessions.

Prof J.Niemela of ICTP and Dr. Hamid Saleem of NCP were the directors of the activity and both are hopeful that collaboration between the two centres will strengthen in the years to come.

The ISS event provides a unique platform and excellent opportunity to young researchers to discuss results of their theoretical and experimental research in the presence of internationally renowned scientists and experts.
