STAFF REPORT ISB: The first project steering committee meeting on Comprehensive Reduction and Elimination of Persistent Organic Pollutants (POPs) was sorted out by Ministry of Climate Change (MoCC). The purpose of the meeting was to exchange ideas in connection to phasing out POPs that are major source of air pollution and trigger heavy environmental challenges.
Secretary MoCC, Arif Ahmed Khan chaired the meeting. In the meeting, he emphasized on effective regulatory policy and a viable enforcement system to keep a check on POP for better strategy making to eliminate them.
The venture has been launched at an expense of $39.38 million for which the government will contribute 11.57, trailed by United Nations Development $300,000, Program Global Environment Facility (GEF) $5.15 million and private sector $ 22.36 million.
National Project Director and Environment and Climate Change Director General Irfan Tariq informed the board of trustees that the key objective of the project is to essentially diminish vulnerability of communities to organic pollutants through enhanced viable environmental management techniques including climate change adaptation and mitigation.
The various sources of organic pollutants, their adverse effects on human health and environment and measures to be taken under the project to address the organic pollutants risks were discussed during the meeting.
