Pakistan and China, especially in the field of Oceanography, are working to deepen their cooperation to protect the oceans from the negative impact of climatic change and minimize the threats to marine life.

Federal Minister for Science and Technology and Defense Production, Rana Tanveer Hussain chaired 7th Board of Governors meeting of the National Institute of Oceanography, at the federal capital. The meeting reviewed various research projects and proposals ongoing between the two countries.

The research proposals include establishment of China-Pakistan Joint Marine Scientific Centre, organizing a workshop on South China Institute of Oceanography and monitoring rise in sea levels among others informed Ministry of Science and Technology.

Federal Minister further stated that the current projects are of crucial importance because climate change on oceans is having a deep impact with every passing day. The overall scientific progress on the various ongoing programmes was briefed to the board by Dr. Asif Inam, Director General, National Institute of Oceanography.

The federal minister directed the DG NIO to take measurable steps to handle the issue of plastic waste and debris dumping in the coastal areas. It was unanimously agreed that preserving the oceanic environment including coasts, sea, and marine life is the need of the hour.

since Beijing announced its ‘belt and road initiative’ relations between Pakistan and China have seen unprecedented growth ever. CPEC, a flagship program of belt and road plan envisions linking economies of over 65 countries.
