MONITORING REPORT IBD: Iran and Pakistan have agreed to invest $718 million to establish a power transmission line through which former will supply electricity to the latter.
“The Iran’s National Development Fund would partly finance the project by contributing $500 million,” Iranian Energy Minister Majid Namjou told the local media in Tehran.
President Asif Zardari in a meeting with his Iranian counterpart Mahmoud Ahmadinejad during the latters recent visit to Islamabad, had reiterated expeditious implementation of the Iran-Pakistan gas pipeline project and the 1,000-MW power transmission line.
The minister said that Tehran and Islamabad have negotiated on boosting Iranian electricity supply to Pakistan by over ten folds to reach 4,000 MW a day. Currently, Iran supplies some 35 MW to Pakistan daily. Namjou had said earlier in the month that Tehran would increase the supply by 1,000 MW by the next three years.
Presently, Iran is exporting power to its seven neighbouring countries namely Afghanistan, Pakistan, Iraq, Turkey, Armenia, Azerbaijan and Turkmenistan.
