PARC, ADB Mission discuss Basmati development

STAFF REPORT IBD: Dr. Iftikhar Ahmad, Chairman PakistanAgricultural Research Council (PARC), has recently presided over a meeting with ADB Mission led by Jiangfeng Zhang and Dr. Surapong Sarkarung, an IRRI Philippines Rice Breeder, here to identify key challenges and opportunities for Basmati Rice Value Chain development in Punjab.

During the meeting, various aspects of the Basmati Rice Value Chain Development,Agricultural Innovation Programme (AIP) Inception in Pakistan and role of ADB, IRRI Philippines, PARC, PARB, RRI KSK, NIAB, NIBGE, Emkay Seeds Limited and other donors and national institutes were discussed before implementation.

PARC being an apex body of agricultural research at national level runs all international collaboration and interacts with CGIAR centres and NARES. Germplasm acquisition from IRRI and distribution to the provincial scientists is the sole responsibility of PARC.

Similarly, no new variety can be released to farmers until and unless it fulfills the varietal release mechanism. Conducting of multi-location National Uniform Yield Trial (NUYT) is mandatory and is done by PARC. New basmati varieties with genes responsible for resistant to BLB and drought will be tested by PARC before these varieties go to farmers.

Dr. Shahid Masood, Member (Plant Sciences) PARC, Dr. Muhammad Azeem, DG (NARC) Dr. Akbar Shah Mehmand, Senior Director (Crops), Dr. Abdul Rehman, National Coordinator (Rice) and other senior scientists/officers were also present in the meeting.
