Pakistan Council of Research in Water Resources (PCRWR) will run its project of “Improving groundwater management to enhance agriculture and farming livelihoods in Pakistan” for further next two years.

PCRWR to run 'Improving Ground Water Management'

Ground Water Management project, funded by the Australian Centre for International Agricultural Research, has completed its two years and will run for the next two years.

The project was providing the chance to construct acquaintance and skills among research organizations, universities and implementing organizations such as provincial government Irrigation Departments.

One focus of the project is to develop computer-based groundwater models that will help decision makers, farming communities and public-sector departments comprehend a variety of possible future scenarios.

While another focus is to create socio-economic models suggesting optimizing water and other crop inputs for maximum benefit. The models can replicate social, economic and biophysical issues, with the long term aim of improving the livelihoods of poor farmers in a sustainable way.

With the help of pertinent government departments, these models can show farming communities how their agricultural practices impact their local groundwater levels. The project is taking an innovative, co-inquiry approach that builds a collaborative partnership among researchers, irrigation departments and farming communities in Balochistan, Punjab, and Sindh.

Ground Water Management will facilitate to put up more sustainable and flexible communities who can deal with the increasing scarcity of surface and groundwater in Pakistan. The project has supported development of stakeholder forums including farmers, renowned scientists and staff from farmer organizations, local irrigation and agricultural related departments.

Improving groundwater management to enhance agriculture and farming livelihoods provided a focus for sharing information about groundwater management and on farm interventions that help save water.

The project team will focus on its case studies to be taught and share how good groundwater management practice can help improve farmers’ livelihoods, and assemble superior respect for these precious resources.
