Prime Minister Imran Khan will soon disclosed cotton price kept at Rs3, 500 per ton and a target of purchasing 500,000 bales would be set from the farmers to boost production of the crop.

Senator Syed Muzaffar Hussain Shah chaired the meeting and Federal Minister for Food Security and Research Sahibzada Muhammad Mehmood Sultan told about the projects undertaken in the new Public Sector Development Programme (PSDP).

Ministry of National Food Security and Research Secretary Dr Hashim Popalzai said that around 18 schemes worth Rs5.8 billion were released by the ministry. He added that a demand of Rs1.6 billion has been made for next financial year’s PSDP.

The ultimate aim of fixing indicative price for cotton in the next month would play a significant role in increasing the growing area for cotton crop in the country.

The committee was told that after devaluation, the development budget of the provinces should have been increased but it was reduced. Earlier, the budget allocated to the provinces was higher.

In keeping view, the committee recommended for conducting zoning to identifying areas for different crops. In the absence of zoning and due to many other reasons, the cotton growers heftily shifting to sugarcane that promptly declining cotton cultivation in the country.
