STAFF REPORT IBD: An inspirational scientist and Fellow of the Royal Society, who became the first scientist from the Muslim world to win the prestigious UNESCO Science Prize in its 35-year history, is to visit the University of Leicester.
Prof. Atta-ur-Rahman, Emeritus Professor of the University of Karachi, will meet with the Vice-Chancellor Prof. Sir Robert Burgess, Lady Burgess and members of the university as well as others from the city and county.
Since 2006, over 80 Pakistanis have joined this university for PhD research degrees sponsored by the HEC of which Prof. Atta was the Chair. The University has several links across Pakistan including Bahria, COMSATS, Hazara, University of Peshawar and the University of Sindh, Jamshoro.
Prof. Sir Robert said: “I am delighted to welcome Prof. Atta-ur-Rahman and his colleagues to the University. Their visit will undoubtedly strengthen the Universitys considerable links with Pakistan and provide an opportunity for senior colleagues to meet and discuss issues of importance to both nations.”
Prof. Atta obtained his PhD in organic chemistry from Cambridge University in 1968. He was elected as Fellow of Royal Society in July 2006 thereby becoming the one of only four scientists from the Muslim world to have ever won this honour.
